Our Story

Built By Cyclists,
For Cyclists

Spoke & Chain opened in 2013 because Portland needed a bike shop that treated every customer like a rider, not a transaction. Twelve years later, that's still the whole idea.

The original shop, 2013

The Short Version

Marcus Webb had been wrenching on bikes in his garage for fifteen years when he decided Portland deserved a shop that was honest about what things cost, realistic about turnaround times, and staffed by people who actually rode. He signed a lease on a 1,200 square foot space on Division Street with three bikes on consignment, a Park Tools workstand, and a strong opinion about cable tension.

The longer version involves a lot of cold coffee, a landlord who didn't believe a bike shop could survive a Portland winter, and a regulars list that grew faster than anyone expected. Within 18 months we expanded into the space next door. We've been there ever since.

"A well-tuned bike is one of those rare things where you feel the care that went into it the moment you ride away. That's what we're after every time."

Marcus Webb, Founder

Today we've got three mechanics, a proper fitting studio, a retail floor stocked with the brands we believe in, and a community ride that leaves from out front every Saturday morning at 8am sharp.

The People Who Fix Your Bike

Every mechanic on our floor is a cyclist first. They ride the gear they recommend and have opinions about headset stack height that they'll share if you ask.

A Proper Workshop

We invested in the right tools because shortcuts show up in the work. Our shop floor is where every repair gets done right, not fast.

Wheel Truing Stand
Professional Park Tools truing stand for precise spoke tension and lateral alignment on every wheel build and repair.
Cable Tension Gauge
Precise drivetrain indexing every time. No guesswork, no "good enough" on cable tension and derailleur alignment.
Dedicated Fitting Studio
Separate from the shop floor with motion capture capability and adjustable fit bikes for comprehensive position analysis.
Full Hydraulic Bleed Setup
Shimano and SRAM hydraulic brake bleeding, mineral oil and DOT fluid. Full disc brake service done right.

We Ride Together

Cycling is better when it's shared. Here's how we stay connected to the Portland cycling community beyond shop hours.

01

Saturday Group Rides

Every Saturday at 8:00 AM from the shop. No-drop format, all fitness levels welcome. We average 12-18mph over 25-35 miles through the city and Forest Park. Coffee stop included.

02

Free Maintenance Clinics

Monthly workshops covering the basics: flat repair, brake adjustment, chain care, cable replacement. We'd rather teach you to fix it yourself than have you stranded. Signup at the shop or online.

03

Race Team Sponsorship

We sponsor and support the Spoke & Chain Racing team competing in local crits, road races, and cyclocross events. If you're racing in Portland, come talk to us.

04

Youth Program

Partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation to provide free bike repairs for youth program participants. We believe every kid should have a working bike.
