One-on-one instruction with Sensei Hayashi or a senior certified instructor. Private sessions accelerate progress, address specific technique problems, or allow complete beginners to get up to speed before joining group classes. Available by appointment, mornings and early afternoons.
Class Schedule
All times are Arizona time (MST). No daylight saving adjustments. Schedule is subject to change on major holidays. Check with the dojo if in doubt.
Private lesson scheduling is separate. Contact the dojo directly to arrange times.
The Journey
In Shotokan Karate, rank is earned. Each promotion requires demonstrated proficiency in kata, kihon (basics), and, at higher levels, kumite. Testing occurs approximately every three to four months. There is no fast track.
Each test covers kihon (basics), kata (forms), and at brown belt and above, kumite (sparring). Sensei evaluates readiness and recommends students when they are prepared, not on a fixed calendar.
Belt testing fees range from $35 (lower kyu grades) to $75 (brown and black belt). Black belt examinations are conducted under JKA oversight and include a separate JKA certification fee.
Dedicated adult students typically reach shodan (1st degree black belt) in 4 to 6 years of consistent training. Children's timelines vary. There is no shortcut and no guarantee. Rank is earned.
