Frequently Asked

What information do I need to provide to get a quote?
The more detail you give us, the faster and more accurate your quote will be. At minimum, we need to know the type of work (structural steel, pipe, railings, etc.), material, rough dimensions or quantities, and your required delivery date. Engineer-stamped drawings give us everything we need to quote precisely. If you only have sketches or a description, we can still give you a ballpark, but final pricing will require a follow-up conversation. Send any drawings directly to shop@ironweldfab.com.
What welding processes do you use, and does it matter for my project?
We use MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), Stick (SMAW), and Flux-Core (FCAW) welding processes. The right process depends on the material, thickness, position, and code requirements. TIG produces the cleanest welds and is used for stainless, aluminum, and precision architectural work. Stick and flux-core handle heavy structural and field work well. MIG is efficient for production work on carbon steel. We select the right process for each application. If your project has a code requirement specifying a process or procedure, let us know and we'll confirm our qualification status before quoting.
How long does fabrication typically take?
Lead times depend on project size, complexity, and current shop load. For ornamental and repair work, we're often 1 to 3 weeks out. Structural steel packages for commercial projects typically run 3 to 6 weeks from approved drawings. Equipment skids and pipe fabrication with code requirements generally need 3 to 8 weeks, partly to allow time for material procurement and any required documentation. We'll tell you our current lead time at the time of quoting and won't take a job we can't deliver on schedule. Emergency repair work can often be handled faster.
Do you perform weld testing and inspection? What certifications do you hold?
Our owner, Marcus Vega, is an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), which qualifies him to examine and document welds to code requirements. He performs in-process and final visual inspection on all structural and pressure work in-house. For non-destructive examination (NDE) including radiographic (RT), ultrasonic (UT), liquid penetrant (PT), and magnetic particle (MT) testing, we coordinate with certified third-party labs. We maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) for all common material and process combinations. Full documentation is available on code jobs.
Can you work from my design, or do I need to provide drawings?
Both options work. For code-required structural and pressure work, we'll need engineer-stamped drawings before fabrication begins. For custom railings, gates, furniture, and ornamental work, we can work from your sketches, photos of a reference design, or even a verbal description. We produce shop drawings for all but the most straightforward jobs, which gives you a chance to review dimensions and details before metal gets cut. For projects where you have no drawings at all, we can assist with the design process or connect you with a structural engineer if your project requires one.
